Designing Efficient <scp>L2</scp> Writing Assessment Tasks for <scp>Low‐Proficiency</scp> Learners of English

This report describes the development of efficient second language (L2) writing assessment tasks designed specifically for low‐proficiency learners English to be included in TOEFL® Essentials™ test. Based on can‐do descriptors Common European Framework Reference Languages A1 through B1 levels proficiency, four task types were identified prototypical candidate target test‐taker population (i.e., adolescent and adult learners). Those included: (a) Describe a Photo, (b) Write Review, (c) Chat With Friend, (d) an E‐mail. These also considered framework test that they had potential accessible elicit sufficient spontaneous purposes within short period time. In current study, eight tasks, two each type, developed piloted with 169 A1–B1 from Japan Colombia. The findings revealed Photo E‐mail performed best eliciting substantial use emphasizing distinct performance attributes, both characteristics needed efficiently measuring takers' proficiency as well discriminating among at lower end spectrum. concludes by highlighting some observations L2 design English.
